PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth police officers and firefighters are investigating three suspicious fires that occurred over the past week.

Fire Chief Steve Achilles told the Seacoastonline that the fires are all likely cases of arson. One fire was reported on Sunday at about 9:19 a.m. at the scrap metal yard on Jones Avenue, which is believed to be intentionally set, according to Achilles.

Another fire occurred at Prescott Park on Tuesday just after 5 a.m. The fire burned a large hole into one of the piers, causing damage to the end of it closest to the water. Sgt. Eric Kinsman said that this fire seemed to be intentional since it started over a body of water.

Railroad ties were also found burning earlier this week in an area behind McDonough Street.

Anyone with information about any suspicious fires in Portsmouth is asked to call police officer Christopher Worthington at 603-610-7578. Anonymous tips can be made through Seacoast Crime Stoppers at (603) 431-1199, at seacoastcrimestoppers.org or by text to CRIMES (274637) with TIPSCS in the message.
