NEWBURGH, N.Y. (AP) The upstate New York police officer who led other rescuers to two boys buried in a pile of wet, packed snow says the look of joy on the kids' faces as they were dug out gave him a terrific feeling.
Newburgh Officer Brandon Rola was in a group of police and neighbors searching for cousins 11-year-old Elijah Martinez and 9-year-old Jason Rivera early Thursday morning. He says he saw footprints disappearing as more snow fell and then a shovel.
He started to dig and worked more frantically when he saw the sole of child's boot and then motion.
The boys were digging a snow fort at about 7 p.m. Wednesday when a passing plow buried them.
They were found conscious but cold and are recovering Friday at a hospital.
