Northern lights spotted in far northern NH, but most missed out

BERLIN - Skywatchers were buzzing over the weekend about a potential sighting of the northern lights, but most missed out on the bright lights known as the aurora borealis.

A Thursday explosion on the sun hurled streams of charged particles into space. Space weather forecasters called for a geomagnetic storm days in advance, which produced the northern lights at high latitudes throughout the world.

In one New Hampshire town, Mt. Washington weather observer and meteorologist Ryan Knapp spotted the aurora.

Most observers in search of the lights failed to see much more than a faint color on the northern horizon.
