NOAA calls for more than $600K for Exeter dam removal

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is recommending more than $900,000 in federal funding for coastal habitat restoration projects in New England, including a major project in Exeter.

The agency is calling for $611,000 for a dam removal project in Exeter, N.H. The agency says the dam is the lowest dam on a major tributary to Great Bay and its removal would help fish habitats.

NOAA also wants to give $300,000 to the town of Harwich, Mass., to restore 55 acres of tidal wetlands in Muddy Creek by replacing two existing undersized culverts with a bridge and channel.

The money is part of $4 million in recommended funding for restoration projects around the country.
