No, just run for president

Only five presidents took office without having served in elected office in the U.S. prior to that time.

Most of these men came to the post after having been successful military leaders and winning public acclaim. These include:

George Washington -- obviously he couldn't have run for Senate or Congress since they didn't exist prior to his presidency!

Zachary Taylor -- successful commander in the Mexican-American War

Ulysses S. Grant -- successfully led the Union against the Confederacy, bringing an end to the Civil War

Dwight D. Eisenhower -- led the allied forces in the assault on Normandy, the liberation of western Europe and the invasion of Germany during World War II

The one outlier here is:

Herbert Hoover -- served as the U.S. Secretary of Commerce under presidents Harding and Coolidge but had never served in elected office prior to the presidency.

Go to the next question.
