'Nightmare House' post reveals longtime friendship of owner, artist who lives upstairs

CAYCE, S.C. — The mysterious tenant of the "nightmare house" in South Carolina is no longer a mystery.

Artist Randall McKissick spoke with the South Carolina newspaper The State after becoming the center of the viral story about a listing on Zillow with a mysterious upstairs tenant.

The listing read, "upstairs apartment cannot be shown under any circumstances," while at the same time telling buyers they will be responsible for the month-to-month tenancy in the upstairs apartment."

The listing soon went viral with social media calling it the "nightmare house" and "creepy."

McKissick supposedly didn't know of the attention his home was getting and asked for clarification about what it said when speaking to The State.

"I'm the tenant," McKissick said. "And I'm the free loader, and I hate that."

According to The State, McKissick was friends with the owner of the house, Michael Schumpert, since they were children.

"I feel guilty," McKissick said while shaking his head in a video on the newspapers website. "I was down and out. Freelance art, whether your a writer, photographer, or a painter, it's feast or famine. And he was just that good of a friend. He never asked for a dime. All he said was, 'I got a place for you.'"

When McKissick fell into hard times and lost his inspiration, as The State reports, his old friend Schumpert offered to let him stay in the upstairs apartment.

McKissick has suffered from anxiety and panic attacks since he was a child, making it hard for him to leave the house. When asked what causes it, he replied simply with homesickness.

The State reported that if McKissick has to move, he will, as he just wants "to find that spark" that will get him painting again.
