NH1 Top 5: The best restaurants in Durham
Home to the biggest university in the Granite State, Durham has tons of eateries that cater to both UNH students and town residents alike. NH1.com takes a look at what customers on Yelp.com are calling the highest rated places to grab a bite.
Mixteca, which opened in 2013, is relatively new to downtown Durham, but the Mexican restaurant is receiving high marks from customer reviews on Yelp. The restaurant features traditional Mexican cuisine with house specialties like bacon guacamole and bottomless Sangria and Mimosas during weekend brunch. Customers are also saying that the service is exceptional and the presentation is superb. However, some customers have complained of a long wait before receiving service. In all, Mixteca has been rated 3 out of 5 stars.
Thai Smile 2 features Thai cuisine with a full-scale dining room and take-out option. Customers have rated the Chicken Pad Thai highly and also say that the Sushi is excellent. One Durham resident stated Thai Smile is a "convenient location for local sushi without the drive to Portsmouth." As for a rating, Thai Smile 2 earned 4 out of 5 stars on Yelp.
Franz's Food is a local favorite for UNH students living in Durham. The take-out style restaurant features a wide variety of breakfast and lunch choices including the famous "JB," which is a breakfast burrito packed with two fried eggs, bacon, hash browns and the option of adding Franz's own "Magma Sauce." Customers say the food is cheap and the service is efficient, giving Franz's a 4.5 out 5 star rating on Yelp. http://www.franzs-food.com/
Looking for a break from eating with predominantly college students? Bella's could be just what you're looking for. Bella's offers American style cuisine with specialty burgers and sandwiches. Locals like the fact that the restaurant isn't filled with UNH students as most places in the area are. Customers write highly of the Reuben sandwich and say the French fries with chipotle mayonnaise are a must. It's no wonder reviewers have given Bella's a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Durham is home to four pizza places, two Asian restaurants and plenty of places to grab a sub and fries, but there is only place on campus to get authentic Greek cuisine-Pauly's Pockets. Customers say the gyros (called pockets) and falafel are the best around and enjoy the French fries as well. The place is a favorite for UNH students due to the low prices and Durham "townies" for the change of pace in cuisine style. It comes as no surprise that Pauly's takes the number one spot in Durham with a 4.5 out of 5 star rating.
