NH1 Political Pulse: Scott Brown calls for probe into National Guard management of scandals

CONCORD - Former U.S. Sen. Scott Brown, R-MA, called upon Gov. Maggie Hassan and legislative leaders to investigate whether New Hampshire National Guard executives were given light treatment.

Brown released a letter he sent to Hassan, House Speaker Shawn Jasper, R-Hudson, and Senate President Chuck Morse, R-Salem, about the handling of Ray Valas, a guard commander who was convicted in Texas for child sex trafficking.

Citing published reports, Brown said Adjutant Maj. Gen. William Reddel received two letters of reprimand regarding Valas.

Also Brown said Col. Jeanne Jones, was selected for mandatory retirement after serving as a whistleblower regarding infractions by the former guard chief of staff.

"The concerns that were brought forward about the management of the guard raises serious doubts that must be addressed,'' Brown said in the letter.

Until last summer, Brown served 35 years in the National Guard serving several years as a judge advocate and also working at the Pentagon on the rewriting of all regulations regarding sexual assault.

"I hereby request a full and impartial investigation be launched, and that the results and findings are made available to the citizens of New Hampshire,'' Brown added.

The governor's press secretary said Hassan has been on top of the matter.

"The governor takes individual complaints received by our office seriously, and we have followed up on the complaints and met directly with the individual,'' Press Secretary William Hinkle said.

"As a result, Governor Hassan worked to ensure that a full independent and impartial investigation was launched by the appropriate authority - the Inspector General of the US Air Force - and that investigation is ongoing, as the Concord Monitor story indicated.''
