NH1 NewsMakers: Sparks fly over Gov. Hassan's veto threat and 2016 presidential fortunes

Presidential politics and the high stakes battle over the next two-year state budget lead to fiery debates on this Sunday’s NH1 Newsmakers program.

Both Senate Majority Leader Jeb Bradley, R-Wolfeboro, and Sen. Andrew Hosmer, D-Laconia, are not aligned with any presidential candidate.

But when it came to Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton’s chances in 2016, they fired off their talking points.

"The biggest concern for Republicans is they don’t see a way to beat Secretary Clinton. So she’s had a large target on her back for quite some time. I think the controversies Senator Bradley talks about are contrived,’’ Hosmer began.

"Four dead Americans in Benghazi; that’s not contrived and the voters are not going to say that’s contrived,’’ Bradley shot back. "And her e-mail problem; potentially she broke the law there.’’

Hosmer said Clinton has expressed regret for the tragedy in Benghazi while she was secretary of state but Republican have been obsessed with these controversies.

I think people have heard enough of that and that’s what I mean by contrived,’’ Hosmer said.

On the state budget, Hosmer said Gov. Maggie Hassan deserves praise for threatening to veto the state budget plan Republican budget writers endorsed on Thursday.

"What’s been passed is irresponsible, these are unfunded tax cuts going to out-of-state corporations,’’ Hosmer said.

The Legislature votes the plan up or down next Wednesday and Hassan said she’ll veto it both because it contains the business tax cuts and does not contain not enough spending for human services and on a state employee contract.

Bradley defended the Senate GOP’s call for a six-month continuing resolution.

"Six months is what we are authorized to do; that’s what we should do,’’ Bradley added.
