NH1 Newsmakers: NH House leaders debate Hassan veto, Supreme Court rulings on Obamacare, same-sex marriage

CONCORD - Two ranking House leaders debate Gov. Maggie Hassan’s veto of the state budget and the stunning Supreme Court rulings on Obamacare and same-sex marriage on this Sunday’s NH1 Newsmakers program.

House Democratic Leader Steve Shurtleff of Concord said he didn’t appreciate Senate President Chuck Morse’s statement that Hassan’s veto was tied to his potential run for the US Senate in 2016 against Republican incumbent Kelly Ayotte.

"First, I want to mention the Senate president's comments and the attack on the governor. That was a personal attack," Shurtleff said.

But House Majority Whip Richard Hinch, R-Merrimack, said Hassan will live to regret the veto of a budget over business tax cuts that she said would blow a $90 million, two-year hole in future state budgets.

"I think the governor made a colossal strategic error,’" Hinch said. "I think she got some pretty poor advice from her staff.’"

On Obamacare, Shurtleff admitted despite the ruling that made protected tax credits for 30,000 residents in New Hampshire, it will still be a struggle to get the Republican-led Legislature to make permanent the expansion of Medicaid coverage for low-income adults.

"The big winners were the 30,000 who have health insurance but the big losers were the 40,000 under Medicaid expansion that still don’t have certainty that their coverage will remain past 2016,’’ Shurtleff said.

Hinch said he doesn’t believe that the Supreme Court ruling making same-sex marriage legal nationwide will touch off a spate of socially conservative legislation at the State House.

"I think the issue has been pretty well settled here for some time," Hinch said.
