NH1 News Investigates Well War Part 2: Barrington business feud boils down to water

BARRINGTON – The war over water in Barrington now turning into a very public war of words.

It’s a fight between a centuries-old store against a new business that wants to open up next door.

Video from the Barrington Beacon's Facebook page is hot and heated, profanities included.

People were yelling at each other outside the town's planning board meeting Wednesday night, too.

“I never said those words..... (inaudible…) women trying to one up each other.... man saying alright, alright, alright, alright,” can be heard on part of the video.

This heated exchange, many say, is dividing this small town.

On one side, George Calef Fine Foods - in the town since 1869.

On the other, a company known as Three Socios, LLC which bought the property next store to Calef.

Their plan is to build a 5,000 square foot gas station and convenience store.

The video continues and here’s what can be heard between both sides. A supporter of George Calef with a man who identifies himself as being part of Three Socios. He speaks first.

“We offered Mr. Calef free water. Do you know what he wants. Free water (companion says.) He wants parking on my land (companion says Everything), he wants snow plowing on my land. Woman behind camera: He does not. He's been in existence for 40 years without you. My side of it is you offered him free water and it was an expense. Socios: There's no expense.”

So what's all the fuss about?

It all boils down to water, well water, that is.

Calef gets his from a neighboring business with Three Socios wanting to put in a community well.

Calef claims that's they're way of putting him out of business while Three Socios says they've gone out of their way for him.

In the meantime, Calef had his own well drilled last month after getting approval from the state but not from the town.

And the latest chapter?

Calef now has to file with the zoning board for that well.

The zoning board will take up the issue on Oct. 13.

Meantime, Calef is suing the town while the Three Socios have also promised legal action.

Take a look at the full video below.

Meet your New Neighbors. Here is Scott Mitchell from Three Socios and his lovely companion, Screaming at Barrington Residents about Mr. Calef being a "Liar"... It was not well ( no pun intended) received.
