NH1 News Investigates: First responders' Facebook photo with beer in AMR headquarters sparks public backlash


MANCHESTER - Have you seen this picture?

Some people have, and they're upset.

The two men are holding beer in their hands in the AMR ambulance headquarters in Manchester while representing their company.

On the left is Christopher Hickey and on the right is his supervisor Christopher Stawasz on Hickey's last day with the company.

“It was in my office," Hickey said when asked about the beer in the photo. "I had punched out already and he wasn’t on duty. It can be there it just can’t be consumed.”

Hickey said his supervisor posted the picture on his Facebook page.

It has since been removed.

It was meant as a celebratory moment, and the two weren’t drinking the beer, Hickey said.

Some people in Manchester said they'd think twice about these first responders.

“I wouldn’t want them helping me if I got hurt,” Amanda Rogers said.

Some said they expect different actions from workers in the profession.

“I expect more from the people that try and serve us,” Josh Albert said.

Not everyone is okay with it - even if they say they weren't drinking it yet when the photo was taken.

I "assume that their intention was to drink those beers - and not to be fully able to do what they do in case there was a problem,” Steve Brophy said.

AMR’s headquarters got wind that the picture was gaining traction online when NH1 News asked for a hard copy of company policies about alcohol in the workplaces.

They called us instead.

“It was an unfortunate thing that they did, but everyone trusts him," AMR's Ron Cunningham said. "I know it’s hard to tell by the picture, but if Chris says those cans are unopened, we're going to believe him.”

Hickey was more than happy to sit down with NH1 News in his new office at Manchester Fire where continues a lot of the work he did for AMR.

He said he doesn’t have Facebook but understands why people in Manchester would be upset.

“I understand that if people thought we were drinking, it could cause some public dismay,” he said.

Others think a lesson should be learned from this social media mistake.

“I think people need to be more careful about what they use in the media - Twitter, Facebook stuff like that.” Brophy said.
