NH1 News Exclusive:Beyond the Bench

MANCHESTER - The Manchester Monarchs are the top team in the East in the ECHL.

Richard Seeley was a fan-favorite player, after 249 games with the team. This season he made his debut as a first-year head coach, returning to the Queen City.

In an NH1 News exclusive, Chantel McCabe and videographer Ian Halter take you to game day inside of the offices, right to the meetings and behind-the-door decisions in 'Beyond the Bench.'

"You can't teach coaching," said "Teddy" the team's equipment manager who's worked for the organization for 15 years. "He actually paid attention to that as a player and it shows."

Seeley was a two-time nominee for the AHLs Man of the year service award. A defeseman that was respected by his teammates and adored by fans.

His new job requires a lot of patience and long-hours. It includes balancing a roster with constant player movement.

"We had to make a trade for a forward;we didn't want to do it but we had to keep roster room," said Seeley. "I had two forwards recalled, one suspended, then three forwards recalled tonight after our game."

Seeley's starts at the rink at 8a.m. and he doesn't leave until 14 hours later. On this particular game day the Monarch's host the Adirondack Thunder to begin three games in four nights. He starts the day with conversations with players, that are not easy.

"They may not like it, they may not understand it, I'm just asking them to control what they can control," Seeley said.

"He's been great for us," said Gasper Kopitar, a Monarchs Center. "Honesty comes a long way especially when you're together for 9 hopefully 10 months in a year."

In part 2 of Beyond the Bench, airing Friday at 5 and 10p.m., we’ll find out if Coach Seeley gets the players he needs. Can the Monarchs pull of an important home victory before hitting the road as they reach the final stretch in the push for the playoffs?
