CONCORD – Chris Christie’s headed back to New Hampshire.
NH1 News learned on Wednesday that the New Jersey governor and former Republican presidential candidate will headline next week’s New Hampshire GOP unity breakfast. The gathering will be held the morning after next Tuesday’s primary, at 8:30am at the Bedford Village Inn.
A senior source close to the Trump campaign told NH1 News that the campaign reached out to the governor to serve as Trump’s chief surrogate in New Hampshire and to keynote next Wednesday’s unity breakfast. The source said Christie, who serves as Trump’s transition chairman, quickly agreed.
The source added that Christie was a natural fit for the role, since he holds major position with the campaign, had a pre-existing “great relationship with the people of New Hampshire”, and was the first former 2016 GOP White House contender to endorse Trump.
During the presidential primaries, Christie banked on a strong finish in the state’s first-in-the-nation primary, and spent more than 70 days campaigning in the state, holding well-received town halls, house parties, meet-and-greets, as he campaigned the New Hampshire way. But he finished a disappointing sixth place in a contest won by Trump. The New Jersey governor dropped his bid for the GOP nomination on Feb. 10, the day after the primary.
On Feb. 26, Christie endorsed Trump at a joint event in Texas.
News of Christie's trip to New Hampshire next week came on the eve the beginning of jury selection in the case of two allies of the New Jersey governor. They are on trial for their alleged roles in the lane closures at the Fort Lee, New Jersey entrances to the George Washington Bridge in 2013.
The controversy, known as Bridgegate, grabbed national attention at the end of 2013 and the beginning of 2014.
