NH1 First Alert Weather: Bitter cold returns to NH this week

NH1 Meteorologist

Milder air continues for one more day, before a blast of arctic air moves in for the middle of the week.

Tuesday will bring some early sun, but then the sky will become partly to mostly cloudy. A spot rain or snow shower can't be ruled out to the north during the afternoon. Highs will be in the 40s to near 50 degrees. The cold front will move through Tuesday night. Out ahead of it, a few more snow showers or squalls are possible overnight, especially in the northern half of the state.

The wind will start to pick up early Wednesday and temperatures will stay steady, or drop some during the day. Some northwesterly gusts to 40 mph are possible on Wednesday.

High pressure builds in for Thursday. The forecast turns much more uncertain from Friday into the weekend. Mild air will attempt to build into the region, but cold air may be stubborn and tough to budge. A period of some wintry weather with cooler air is possible, especially Sunday or Monday.

Detailed 7-day forecast:

TONIGHT - Partly cloudy. Chilly with a light northwest wind. Lows in the mid to upper 20s.

TUESDAY - Partly to mostly cloudy. A spot afternoon shower to the north. Highs in the 40s to near 50.

TUESDAY NIGHT - Partly to mostly cloudy; chance of a snow shower or squall as colder air arrives. Wind picks up, becoming northwest 10 to 15 mph. Temperatures dropping into the 20s.

WEDNESDAY - Partly sunny, windy and very cold. Temperatures in the 20s, stay steady or drop some. Northwest wind 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 40 mph possible.

THURSDAY - Bitter cold to start the day, with lows in the single digits. Mostly sunny, still blustery, with a northwest wind 10 to 15 mph. Highs in the low 30s.

FRIDAY - Early sun, then increasing clouds. Chance of a late day shower. Highs in the mid 40s.

SATURDAY - Mostly cloudy, chance of showers. Temperatures in the 40s.

SUNDAY - Highly uncertain forecast. It may turn colder, with a chance for a wintry mix south and clearer skies to the north. Temperatures in the 30s.

MONDAY - Mostly cloudy, highs in the 30s.
