NH utility sends warning about bait-and-switch scam involving fake checks
HAMPTON — New England utility company Unitil is warning residents about a bait-and-switch scam being done in the name of the corporation.
Since June 15, Unitil had six different non-Unitil customers ask them about letters sent to non-customers that had checks totaling $3,776.25.
The letters told the recipients that Unitil was a "Secret Shopper" business and customers could enroll by sending $2,000 to an unknown account and spending the rest of the fake money to make purchases and review businesses.
The letters were sent to areas where people don't know Unitil is a utility company, such as Georgia, South Carolina and Florida.
Unitil reached out to law enforcement to report the scam and warned anyone who receives the letters to throw them away or notify authorities.
