NH School Breakfast Challenge: 9 schools recognized

CONCORD - N.H. Kids Count - along with the N.H. Department of Education, the School Nutrition Association of New Hampshire and the New England Dairy and Food Council - recognized nine schools this morning who have made exceptional strides in the N.H. School Breakfast Challenge in its first year.

The N.H. School Breakfast Challege was launched in 2013 as a two-year initiative to grow student participation in school breakfast 25 percent by December 2015. According to Kids Count Executive Director Ellen Fineberg, 90 percent of New Hampshire schools serve breakfast, but many kids aren't eating it.

In fact, New Hampshire comes in last place in the United States for utilizing school breakfasts.

"The way breakfast is served, and the time breakfast is served, has made a huge difference in how many students utilize the school breakfast program," Fineberg said.

For example, instead of serving traditional breakfast in the cafeteria, adapting the "grab 'n go" method would allow students to grab a bag full of breakfast items and eat it in their classroom.

185 N.H. schools increased participation in school breakfast with 71 meeting the benchmark of a 25 percent growth rate. The top achieving schools who were recognized this morning by Gov. Hassan and the Executive Council.

The schools recognized

- Gilford Middle School

- Hampstead Central School

- Hancock Elementary School

- Hudson Memorial School

- Londonderry Middle School

- Merrimack High School

- North Hampton Elementary School

- Oyster River High School

- Profile Senior High School

Fineberg said studies have shown students who eat breakfast attended more days of school, score an average of 17.5 percent higher on standardized math tests, and are less likely to experience chronic illness and obesity.
