NH's Youth Deer Hunt Weekend harvest down this year

The Associated Press

CONCORD (AP) — New Hampshire's Fish and Game Department says preliminary reports show that young hunters succeeded in harvesting 246 deer during the Youth Deer Hunt Weekend, down 37 percent from last year.

While not yet official, the 2016 total for this past weekend is below the average since the special youth deer hunt began in 1999.

Deer Project Leader Dan Bergeron says despite poor hunting conditions with heavy rain on Saturday and strong wind on Sunday, many youth hunters were still successful over the weekend.

The youth deer weekend gives young people statewide the opportunity to go deer hunting with an adult mentor. Accompanying adults must be licensed hunters and aren't allowed to carry a firearm.

All youth hunters under age 16 must be accompanied by a licensed adult 18 years or older while hunting.
