CONCORD (AP) - New Hampshire's winner in the annual "Poetry Out Loud" championship is from Goffstown High School.

Dessaline Etienne will compete at the national championship in Washington, D.C., April 28-29. As state champion, he receives $200 and travel expenses. His school receives a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books.

Etienne recited "Weighing In," by Rhina P. Espaillat; "The Man with the Hoe," by Edwin Markham; and "The Blues Don't Change," by Al Young.

Nora Doyle from Plymouth Regional High School was selected as alternate champion.

The program helps high school students strengthen their public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about their literacy heritage.
