NH mom could face child endangerment charges after overdose recorded in dollar store

SALEM – A New Hampshire woman who can be seen in a video, overdosed and limp on a store floor while her toddler attempts to wake her, may be charged with child endangerment.

Lawrence, Massachusetts police said the woman was revived with two doses of Narcan. Bystanders called 911 after finding her passed out in the toy aisle of Family Dollar.

The woman’s toddler can be heard crying, trying to wake her mother. Eventually, a man comforts the girl, who is wearing pajamas.

According police, the woman is a Salem, N.H., resident.

The video has been seen thousands of times and many people have commented on social media. Some wonder why the person taking the video isn’t comforting the child, others said the video should not have been shared online.

Police said they shared the video not to shame the woman, but to show the devastating effects of the drug crisis and to give people a view into what first responders see on a daily basis.

“We have to think about the children,” said ‘Drug Czar’ James Vara, “Making sure that there is a mechanism in place that every child is safe, certainly one who’s parent is suffering from a substance abuse disorder.”

Earlier this year, Governor Hassan signed a bill that gives DCYF power to protect a child in cases of drug misuse. The woman shown in the video has not been charged, but Lawrence police said charges are likely.

The child has been placed in protective custody.
