FREMONT - Police say a Danville woman and her 9-month old baby are lucky to be alive - the woman went to take pictures and her car ended up in the middle of the Exeter River.
"I had stopped the car and I put her out because we were going to stroll around and take some nice scenic pictures cause it's a nice river view there and it had some nice foliage," said Michelle Gorton, clearly upset and in shock after her car took a dive in the river Monday morning.
"I had just put all new tires and breaks on it. I'm on a budget so it cost a lot of money."
Gorton said she bought a camera at a yard sale and was hoping to make some extra money on the side by taking pictures.
"When I went to grab my camera, I must have somehow shifted the gear or something because I went back and I was putting the camera and stuff into the stroller and it lunged forward," she said.
Her car then rolled down the bank and into the water. Morgan's towing company of Epping said when they got there, the car was still running and about 30 feet out in the middle of the water.
"It was up over the windows," said Kevin Morgan, Owner Morgan's towing company. "The key was on, the wipers, you could see the wipers going and that's what made us know the car was still on."
Cold water and thick muck made it difficult to remove the car, taking about two hours to get it out.
"You can get a great suction from the mud, so it makes it hard to pull, most definitely," Morgan said.
Police said if Gorton didn't grab her daughter when she did, the outcome could have been a lot worse.
"She's lucky that it didn't roll sooner than it did," said Officer Kurtis Boissonneault of the Fremont Police Department. "She was able to get out and get her child out of there and a couple of things before it decided to roll."
"She's my baby so as long as she's safe, I'm happy," said Gorton.
