NH man sentenced after stabbing UNH student last year
A Salem man who stabbed a University of New Hampshire student in the abdomen and back last year will serve 12 months in Strafford County House of Corrections.
Matthew Gibbons and Eric Denning were in an off-campus apartment complex when they became involved in an altercation with a group of men who lived there. After Denning punched one of them in the face, Gibbons used his knife to attack Dean Skelley.
Supporters of Gibbons filled the courtroom at a sentencing hearing in Dover Monday afternoon. Many of his family members and friends began to cry as the hearing went on.
In addition to the year in county jail, Gibbons was sentenced to three and a half to seven years in prison, but all of that time will be suspended as long as he is of good behavior.
