DURHAM — The infamous New Hampshire criminal "Jack the Snipper" was arrested and returned to the state prison after allegedly creeping around a Durham middle school on Thursday.

Durham police said Jeffrey Gelinas, 41 of Nashua, was arrested July 6 by Durham officers on a prowling charge after someone reported suspicious activity near Oyster River Middle School. Police searched the area with the help of a K-9 and found Gelinas sitting on a rock in the woods behind the school and arrested him.

Police said he may have been on probation from a previous charge and will have to face trial for the charge.

Gelinas originally became known as "Jack the Snipper" after being suspected of snipping the underwear off sleeping females 10 years ago at the University of New Hampshire. He has had numerous previous incidents with the police, including being convicted for hiding in a woman's closet in 1995, peeping into apartment windows in 1999, and exposing himself to a young child in a store 4 years ago.
