NH man injured after falling from ice climbing cliff at Cannon Mountain

FRANCONIA — A climber was rescued after he fell 50-60 feet off an ice cliff on the Black Dike climbing route on Cannon Cliff Saturday, injuring his lower leg.

Nick Pearson, 47, of Amherst, was near the end of climbing the route when he buried his axes into hard snow. When he tried to pull himself up, the snow gave way and he fell.

Conservation officers got the call at just before noon about the accident. Officers along with volunteers from the Pemi Valley Search and Rescue Team, and 14 good Samaritan volunteer climbers started up to the base of the cliff to help extract Pearson from the difficult terrain at 1 p.m.

He was loaded into a litter at about 2:30 p.m. The rescue crew arrived with Pearson at the bike path where he was taken to the trailhead by a snow machine.

He was then taken to Littleton Regional Hospital for evaluation.
