NH man charged with attacking woman in police department lobby

MERRIMAC, Mass. - A New Hampshire man was arrested after police say he assaulted a woman in the lobby of the Merrimac police station on Friday.

Police say Steven Nichols, 54, of North Hampton was on top of a woman and holding her head to the ground in the lobby when an officer drew a taser and ordered him to get off of her.

Further investigation revealed that Nichols met the woman earlier and had picked her up at her home. They drove together to Salisbury, Mass., where Nichols owns a boat. On the ride home, the woman told police his behavior suddenly changed, and he began threatening and assaulting her and grabbing her throat.

Once they got to the station, surveillance video shows Nichols forcing the woman out of the car and dragging her into the lobby, where he slammed her head to the floor before the officer found him pinning her down. The woman refused medical treatment at the station.

Nichols was charged under Massachusetts law with assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (the floor) and kidnapping.

Nichols was held on $2,500 bail, and is scheduled to be arraigned Newburyport District Court on Friday.
