NH golfers celebrate warm, snow-free December by teeing up at area golf courses

SOMERSWORTH — Warm weather and the absence of snow this December has been a boon to golfers, with a number of area courses remaining open, including The Oaks in Somersworth, among other places.

Frank Crossman of Dover, told that he's played golf six times already this month.

"It's awesome," Crossman said. "Just the fact that you're playing golf in December. We call these 'bonus days.' Any day I can get out and play golf, it's a bonus day."

The day after Thanksgiving was extremely busy at Rochester Country Club, according to Chris Mowers, the club's PGA director of golf.

"I think we've been open only once in the past six years on Black Friday," Mowers said. This year, "we did over 140 players the day after Thanksgiving."

His course also welcomed 200 players last Sunday and he anticipated another 80 to 100 each day this weekend.

Shaun Bishop, director of golf at The Oaks, said his course will likely stay open until the first snowfall.

He said his list of tee times for this past week is packed, and the course is in great shape with no temporary greens.

"It's in phenomenal condition," Bishop said. "Our superintendent said he has never seen a December like this."
