NH defense company offers tips, information on possible active shooter situations

CONCORD -Blue U Defense, a New Hampshire company run by experienced law enforcement officers, uses re-enactment video of the Colombine School shooting, among others, to demonstrate what not to do in an active shooter situation.

Blue-U Defense Instructor Terry Choate said, "Everybody thinks it's not going to happen to us. It's always going to be somewhere else. I guarantee every victim of these crimes thought the same thing. It's not going t happen to me."

These instructors teach companies and employees how to make the right decision in a fraction of a second because it's that split decision that will likely determine whether you live or die. They say your first priority should always be to escape.

Instructor Joseph Hileman said, "There is not a single worst place for you to be in a classroom in a school setting than underneath the table and hide and hope. It's that I can't see you so you can't see me mentality. We have to break that mentality."

If you can't escape, they say barricade yourself. Lock and then block doors any way you can. The average active shooter situation lasts 10 minutes. The average response time for law enforcement is 14 minutes, so anything that buys time works in your favor.

Once you're barricaded in, Blue U Defense says you can't just hide and hope. You have to immediately prepare for battle. Heavy or sharp objects, hot coffee, a fire extinguisher can all become your weapons.

Finally, destroy. In situations where you're the victim, fight for your life on the spot. Never, ever get in a vehicle and go to a 2nd location.

Choate said, "The chances of these happening these days, no matter where you are, are way up. Way up."

Their motto, if it's not a battle it's a slaughter.
