NH corrections officers indicted over treatment of Conway inmate

The Associated Press

CONCORD — Two New Hampshire corrections officers have been indicted on charges linked to their alleged treatment of an inmate at a Conway halfway house in July.

Sgt. Robert Gauthier of Epsom is accused of using a knife to cut an inmate's shirt. Sgt. Dennis Fitton of Alexandria is accused of withholding medical care from the inmate until he agreed to report that he had cut himself.

Gauthier and Fitton were suspended with pay on May 15 while an investigation takes place.

Both are facing witness tampering charges. Gauthier also is charged with reckless conduct and falsifying evidence.

The corrections officers could not be reached for comment. It was not immediately known if they are being represented by attorneys.
