NH art students create a buzz with their mural of bees behind the Palace Theatre

MANCHESTER - Students at the New Hampshire Institute of Art have created a large-scale mural of a tiny subject: bees.

The new mural is located in an alley behind the Palace Theatre, an area that had been subject to graffiti and acts of vandalism when a member of the theater's board had the idea to use the area for a community mural.

Eleven students at the Institute proposed ideas and decided on the image, according to spokesman Scott Spradling. They were interested in taking something small and magnifying it to stretch over the 100-foot canvas of brick, he said.

Despite the challenge of painting the old bricks, balancing ladders on an uneven surface and dealing with traffic from delivery trucks, the students completed the mural -- with part of the process captured on video.
