State Police received a report of an adult male, identified as Cody Lafont, of Claremont, that had been fatally shot by a police officer during a confrontation the officer on September 25 at about 4 a.m.

The death had been ruled a homicide on Sept. 27, caused by the gunshot wounds to the chest.

The report reads that Lafont had been out drinking with friends that night. When he returned home he made several calls to 911, until Corporal Ian Kibbe responded to the call just before 5 a.m. When Kibbe arrived at the residence, Lafont was there with his dog by his side and a pistol in hand, according to police.

Lafont directed his weapon at Kibbe while smiling and then Kibbe fired his weapon three times at Lafont. Police later reviewed Lafont's weapon and determined it was not loaded when he pointed it at the officer, according to the AG.

The AG's office concluded that, "Lafont created a dangerous situation, which he escalated to the point where it became reasonable for Corporal Ian Kibbe to conclude that he face an imminent threat of deadly force from Mr. Lafont, and to use deadly force against him in order to protect his own life."

No police officers were injured during the incident. This investigation has been completed and the case is closed.
