KEENE — The Attorney General's Office said a confrontation between a man and two police officers on Monday led them to fire their weapons at him.

Attorney General Gordon J. MacDonald and New Hampshire State Police Colonel Christopher J. Wagner said Keene police responded to an apartment at 40 Wilford Street around 2 p.m. to assist a woman and her child who were moving their belongings out of the residence.

Police said another resident of the apartment, Patrick Letendre, 28, engaged in a brief confrontation with two officers after all the woman's belongings were removed from the home.

During that confrontation, police said the two officers discharged their weapons and Letendre was wounded by gunfire. He was taken to a local hospital for the treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials said that no law enforcement officers or private citizens were injured during the incident.

The Attorney General's Office is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the officers' decisions to discharge their weapons. They said a third officer was present at the scene, but he did not discharge his weapon.

The names of the officers involved will be released after they are formally interviewed by the Attorney General's office. Officials said the interviews are expected to take place this week.

The officers have been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation is underway.

Officials said none of the officers were wearing body cameras and that there is no known footage of the incident available at this time.

The Attorney General's office said their role in an officer-involved deadly force investigation is to determine if the officer’s use of deadly force was justified under the law.

The Cheshire County Attorney’s office will also be reviewing the circumstances to determine if criminal charges will be brought against Letendre in connection with the incident.
