NEWMARKET - Authorities said an infant has a skull fracture and 17 broken bones. Police have charged his father with assault in Newmarket.
Police said the Newmarket Police Department was notified, Tuesday evening, that a possible child abuse victim was being treated at Boston's Children's Hospital.
Investigators learned that the child, a 3-month-old boy, had sustained a skull fracture under suspicious circumstances.
Investigators went to the hospital to gather evidence and information in the case.
Investigators learned that the child had sustained severe injuries and had 17 broken bones throughout the body.
Based upon the investigation to date the child's father, Jose Orta-Santana of Newmarket, was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree assault and one count of second-degree assault.
He was held on cash bail until an arraignment at the Brentwood Circuit Court on Thursday.
The investigation is continuing at this time.
