ROCHESTER — “I can relate to being up all night,” said Amanda Pinkham, Director of the new Rochester Community Recovery Center.
Amanda Pinkham calls herself an addict but her addiction is not to drugs.
“In terms of addiction I have a long history of self injury and I self identify as someone with a psychiatric condition, so I'm in recovery from that,” she told NH1 News, while standing outside the new center on North Main Street in Rochester.
“We will be offering 24/7 response services to Rochester residents,” said John Marzinzik, President and CEO of Frisbie Memorial Hospital.
Since August of last year, 13 people have died from drug overdoses in Rochester, compared with five overdose deaths the year before.
“This is something our community is struggling with’” said Caroline McCarley, Mayor of Rochester.
Starting Oct. 1, Frisbie’s emergency room and the Rochester Police Department will be designated as safe zones.
“Anyone who comes in, we're going to get them help and that's an important part of this initiative,” Rochester Police Chief Michael Allen told reporters at a scheduled press conference on Tuesday.
He said what makes Rochester’s program unique is the total community approach. The YMCA will provide free memberships to those in recovery. There's job training and children's services. Also this fall, a new curriculum about drug addiction will be taught in the classrooms.
