New north country hut proposed in NH for first time in 50 years

The Associated Press

NASHUA — The Appalachian Mountain Club and the state of New Hampshire are proposing to build the first new north country hut in 50 years.

The Nashua Telegraph reports the proposed Sparkling Cascade Hut would accommodate 50 guests plus staff. It will provide clean water, bathrooms and outdoor space for park visitors throughout the year.

Access to the hut will be through a new trail constructed off the Arethusa-Ripley Falls Trail that connects to the Ethan Pond Trail.

Paul Cunha, vice president of outdoor operations for the AMC, says use of the hut system has tripled since the last one, Mizpah Springs, opened in 1965. There are currently eight huts.

If approved by the state, the AMC would pay for construction, operation and upkeep for the hut and new trail.
