NORTHWOOD — A father and his son were rescued from Saddleback Mountain after taking a wrong turn and becoming lost as night fell.
Fish and Game Department officials say 41-year-old James Morton of Deerfield and his son started their hike in Meadows State Park in Northwood at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Morton called 911 just before 8 p.m. after they were overcome by darkness.
Northwood police and fire officials and Fish and Game conservation officers used GPS coordinates to locate Morton and his son. Rescuers say the father and son were cold but uninjured. They were led off the mountain and driven two miles to their car.
Fish and Game Lt. Jim Juneau urges hikers to be prepared with the seasons changing and daylight hours growing shorter.
