New England woman, first to swim length of Winnipesaukee, plans English Channel swim
STONEHAM, MASS.— A Massachusetts woman, known for being the first woman to swim across the length of Lake Winnipesaukee, is planning another epic swim this month.
Julie Burnett of Stoneham, Massachusetts, will attempt to swim the English Channel, which separates England from France.
The Channel Swimming Association states that the shortest distance is 21 miles. Swimming speeds have ranged from 7 hours to almost 27 hours.
According to Stoneham Wicked Local, Burnett has made other marathon swims before, including Lake Winnipesaukee, and she completed the Manhattan Island 28.5 mile marathon swim — twice.
Burnett said she is swimming to raise awareness of Operation Delta Dog, which provides service dogs to returning veterans.
