WOODS HOLE, Mass. — Equipment from a Cape Cod ocean research facility will be used in a planned dive on the Titanic.

When Washington state's OceanGate Expeditions dives on the famed sunken liner in 2018, it will carry equipment from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute based on Cape Cod.

WHOI's advanced Imaging and Visualization Laboratory is involved in ongoing efforts to fully document the ship, which sank on April 15, 1912 after hitting an iceberg. More than 1,500 people died.

The ship was discovered on the ocean floor in 1985 by WHOI and french researchers.

According to the Cape Cod Times, this is the first manned trip to the ship since 2005.

Lighting and imaging equipment will be used to make a 3-D model of the wreck and debris field.

The expedition is scheduled for May of 2018.
