New England high school may be first to offer sports hijabs for muslim students
PORTLAND, Maine — A Maine high school may be the first to offer sports hijabs for their Muslim students.
According to an article from The Portland Press Herald, Deering High School became the first school in the nation to outfit athletes with hijabs designed for physical activity.
Traditional hijabs, the Portland Press reports, are "thick and prone to unraveling" whereas the sports hijabs are lightweight and designed to pull on rather than wrap around.
Ten of the sports hijabs are being used for tennis, lacrosse and track. The high school will issue the hijabs at the beginning of each season and collected afterwards, like with any part of a uniform. Students can choose between black, white or purple, Deering High's school colors.
