New England Aquarium celebrates International Penguin Awareness Day

Today is international penguin awareness day!

The New England Aquarium in Boston is home to a penguin colony of about 90 birds, with 3 different species - African, Rockhopper and Little Blue.

The aquarium stresses that even though they have a prominent and healthy program, that penguins in the wild are on the decline.

In 1900 it was estimated that the wild African penguin population was around 1,500,000. That number in 2010 was around 55,000.

See all the facts the aquarium posted here.
