All the Good Sports: Win the Cup, Lose Your Job?
In case you missed it, the Caps won the Stanley Cup earlier this month and are reportedly still celebrating. Somehow that trick wasn't enough to help head coach Barry Trotz negotiate a new contract with the team.
The 55-year-old Trotz has been a head coach in pro hockey for 24 of the last 25 years. The only year he didn’t coach was the 1997-98 season when he was helping to put the expansion Nashville Predators together. He spent 15 years in Nashville and the last four in Washington.
There’s just one current coaching opening in the NHL and that’s the New York Islanders. Here’s my guess... Trotz doesn’t coach anywhere for two years and becomes the architect of the NHL’s new Seattle franchise scheduled to take the ice in the fall of 2020.
