Nashua faces severe budget restrictions, puts hold on hiring all non-emergency personnel
NASHUA — Nashua has been faced with pressing budget issues, specifically for the 2018 fiscal year, which caused the motion to temporarily hold off on hiring non-emergency personnel.
On Tuesday, Mayor Jim Donchess issued a statement to all directors in the city asking that departments refrain from filling vacant non-emergency positions until further notice., according to The Union Leader.
The 2018 fiscal year will be hard due to a $2 million increase in local contribution to the New Hampshire Retirement System, requiring them to contribute $23 million to the pension system as opposed to their usual $21 million, the mayor told the UL.
A budget summit has been scheduled for Thursday in order to address some of the concerns officials will face in the upcoming spending plan. Significant cuts may be necessary.
The interim Superintendent Connie Brown composed a list potential cuts that would help reach a level-funded budget, but told the UL she does not recommend any of them. Some revisions include: increasing elementary class sizes, reduce high school electives, eliminate secondary bus runs, remove the Clearway Alternative Education Program, and to reduce administration by eliminating elementary assistant principals, high school administrators or central office staffing, all of which would cause issues.
The budget summit will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday at Nashua City Hall.
