LOUDON - Two Hendrick Motorsports crew members are happy to return to the Granite State for the Sylvania 300 this weekend. After all, they grew much of their racing careers here.
Woodsville native Dave Poronto scored a job with NASCAR after finishing school in Concord.
For years, he raced with teams across New Hampshire and northern New England. Today, he is the shock engineer for #5 Kasey Kahne.
Unfortunately, he doesn't make it back to N.H. outside the two visiting races each year. In fact, most of his time is spent on the road.
"Ongoing day to day, we spend about two and a half days a week in the shop just trying to prepare," Poronto told NH1 News.
Poronto isn't the only crew member with ties to the Granite State.
His colleague, Race Engineer Taylor Moyer, grew up in the small town of Shoreham, Vermont across the state border.
"I don't get to come back up here very often anymore, so getting back up here with this weather and the scenery and the type of people is nice," Moyer said.
2015 marks the first year Moyer has gotten to travel with the #5 team, but he's been working for Hendrick for nearly a decade.
"I'm the middleman between the crew chief and the mechanics on the car," he said.
Moyer first started racing in 4th grade.
He left the dirt tracks of Vermont and New Hampshire behind to learn more about asphalt track challenges in North Carolina, where he obtained his mechanical engineering degree.
Then, he learned the ins and outs of the race car by doing every job in the shop.
Today, he monitors all of the working parts of the car, and focuses on areas that can be enhanced for better performance and results.
"Keeping up with tire wears, and the performance of our car - trying to really aid the crew chief in any way we can to make the car go faster," he said.
Thousands of fans are expected to fill the stands on Sunday in the chase for the Sprint Cup.
