MONTPELIER, VT- Bryan Sturge doesn't always win epic beard contests, but when he does, he does it in memory of his daughter Zoey.

The Vermont Beardies contest was held over the weekend to raise money for Make-a-Wish Vermont and featured celebrity judge and Vermonter Jonathan Goldsmith, who portrays the character known as The Most Interesting Man in the World for Dos Equis beer.

Sturge, this year's winner, hadn't shaved in two years, ever since he promised his then cancer-stricken daughter Zoey he wouldn't do it until she recovered.

Zoey died in 2013.

The well-known pitch man told the Burlington Free Press he looks for,"The character of the beard, how it brings forth something indigenous to the individual, something personal."

The event raised almost $30,000.
