Melissa Gilbert, 48, of Wentworth, her 11-year-old son and his friend left the parking lot at 5 a.m. to hike and were expected back at 3:30 p.m. the same day. The friend arrived back at the back at the parking lot at 8:30 p.m. and reported Gilbert and her son were a few miles behind and moving slowly. When the group had not returned by 11 p.m., 911 was called.

At 7:30 a.m. Monday, 15 members of the New Hampshire State Police CERT team arrived to assist in the search. The mother and son were located at 10:20 a.m. between West Quarry and Anna mountains. They said they became disoriented and decided to set up camp for the night, officials said. Searchers reported they were found wet and cold, but were able to walk out on their own.
