Milford responds to newspaper report of school and gun issue

NH1.com

The Milford School Board responded to a recent newspaper story that called attention to its discussion over whether guns would be allowed in school.

The Milford Cabinet reported on December 15 that the town's school board was "wrestling with the issue of guns in schools, and is looking for ways to restrict firearms without violating a law that allows them."

At the center of the issue is federal laws that restrict weapons in "safe school zones."

In a letter to parents on the town's website, superintendent of schools Bob Marquis wrote, "After speaking with legal council and local authorities I would like to make it very clear that under Federal Statute our Milford schools are “safe school zones”. As such it is very clear that any pupil/student who brings or possesses a firearm without written authorization from me (or my designee) shall be expelled for a period of not less than 12 months."

The newspaper reported that the topic was raised after the state's attorney general's office issued a statement about voters bringing weapons to schools when the buildings are used as polling places.

"The review of this policy at this time is an attempt to make sure it accurately meets our legal obligations and is sufficiently clear in how it is worded. I assure you that the key elements presented here are already in our School Board policy and you and your sons and daughters have been notified of this policy on a yearly basis as it is included in Parent Handbooks and Student Handbooks."
