Mild winter means lots of open water as fishing season nears

The Associated Press

CONCORD - One of the mildest winters on record means there's plenty of open water on New Hampshire lakes, but some lakes nonetheless will remain closed to open water fishing until April 1.

While the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries started the open water fishing season there on March 16, two weeks earlier than normal, New Hampshire did not adjust its schedule.

The New Hampshire Department of Fish and Game says there are numerous water bodies that are open to fishing by all legal methods year-round. There are 14 lakes that are managed for landlocked salmon, lake trout and rainbow trout. Only ice fishing is allowed on those lakes until April 1, though many already feature vast amounts of open water.
