Merrimack County Sheriff's Office warn of phone scam

CONCORD - Merrimack County Sheriff Scott Hilliard is warning Granite Staters of a phone scam where callers are pretending to be the law enforcement and telling victims they owe debts and must pay immediately.

Hilliard says the believable part in all this in the incoming phone number is disguised to look like the call is actually coming from the Sheriff's Office.

Hilliard says the Sheriff's Office will never ask you for money over the phone. He says their office has received several dozen phone calls in the last couple weeks from concerned citizens who have received these types of phone calls. Hilliard says the best thing you can do is hang up and call their office.

Hilliard says the scammers typically have a middle eastern accent and typically target the elderly.

He encourages anyone with questions to call Danielle Smith at the Sheriff's Office at (603) 796-6634 or dsmith@merrimacksheriff.net.
