Merrimack considers water company's solar power project

The Associated Press

MERRIMACK — A water company wants to build one of the largest solar power plants in the state in Merrimack, but town officials are concerned about setting a precedent for future projects with the financing.

The Telegraph reports that Pennichuck Water Works is proposing a 1-megawatt solar power project on watershed land in Merrimack that could produce 25 percent of the company's total electricity. Instead of property taxes, it wants to pay a percentage of the project's total value to the town.

Town officials are wary of that idea, because under state law, any agreement the town reaches with Pennichuck would apply to all future solar projects.

They plan to revisit the request at the May 15 Town Council meeting.
