BOSCAWEN - For the first time in New Hampshire, hundreds of fallen soldiers are being honored with a Vietnam War memorial.
Thousands of American soldiers died in the Vietnam War, 228 of those men were from New Hampshire. A ceremony for these fallen heroes was held Saturday in Boscawen.
"He graduated and I was still in high school," said Goody Khalsay of her high school classmate Ralph Cummings whom she went to prom with in 1969. "Later I learned he had joined the Marines and I thought, that gentle sweet young man joined the Marines? How is that working? But he did! He made the grade and he went over."
Cummings was shot and killed three months into his tour of duty. The loss of her friend inspired Khalsay to organize this commemoration of those New Hampshire heroes who lost their lives in the Vietnam War.
"We lost him, but I've never forgotten him and I never will," Khalsay said.
Others who were at the event were overseas fighting in the war and lost fellow comrades.
"They hit the unit pretty bad at the time 'cause they were within about five days of coming home," said Walter Holt, a retired liaison sergeant for the New Hampshire National Guard. Five of his friends died together and he says he was scared his last day overseas thinking something bad might happen.
