Meeting to discuss Portsmouth historic district

The Associated Press

PORTSMOUTH — A downtown historic district in Portsmouth is under consideration for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

A public meeting on the district's proposed boundaries and benefits for property owners is scheduled for Sept. 28 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Portsmouth Public Library.

A downtown historic district in Portsmouth previously had been recognized as National Register-eligible by federal and state agencies. After a comprehensive review, properties within the downtown area that meet National Register standards have been included in the nomination, which must be approved by the National Park Service in order for official National Register status to be given.
